Voice of the Customer Explainer Video

Animated Explainer Video

An explainer video to explain an essential company practice, outline the reasons for doing it and the benefits for everyone involved.

The Task:

Explain the client’s annual survey to new starters and current staff in an informative, engaging way.

The Tools:

Hand Drawing (storyboards)

Illustrator (style frames, animation preparation)

After Effects (animation)

Audition (Voice-Over Editing)

The Process:

The client was in need of a way to explain an annual survey in a way that was both accessible to new staff and useful for current employees. After the success of their first explainer video (see: The Candidate’s Experience), I pitched the idea of another explainer video that would take people from learning about the survey for the first time to understanding why it was done and the benefits to everyone involved. I was given the green-light to pursue this, and formed a small task-force to achieve it.

I worked with a few staff members to learn as much as I could about the survey, help with writing a script, and reviewing the script for content. Once we had a script close to finished, I started hand-drawing ideas on how to visualise each topic the video covered. Doing this gives me a bit of a head-start for idea generation and allows me to explore a few different ideas without the pressure of a deadline pushing me to choose the first option over the best option.

Once the script was finalised and approved, I recorded and mastered the voice over using Adobe Audition, and used my draft hand-drawn storyboards to create some style frames (I’ve included some of the sketches evolving into style-frames here). Both story-board and style frames were submitted for approval, and once they were approved, I began work on creating assets.

This was a full custom explainer video, so I created three culturally-diverse characters (these are the little guys you can see to the right here), backgrounds and visual assets myself. After finishing, rigged up the characters, composited the backgrounds and started animating.

I used Adobe Stock to find and use some approved corporate stock music, and used AI to adjust the length of the music to perfectly fit the timing of the explainer.

The video was finalised and published to all current staff, and was included in the new-starter resources for all staff in the APAC region. I received glowing feedback from current staff and new starters for the video saying that the video was very clear and informative while being fun and engaging, providing a lot of value for the client, the customers, and everyone working there.
